Having a migraine can definitely disturb one’s workflow for the day. But thanks to migraine medications, the pain can immediately be eased, allowing us to go on with our tasks.

People may also opt to prepare themselves ahead of time by taking medicines that prevent migraines. These medications work best when they are taken as soon as we notice signs of a migraine.

The practice of taking ibuprofen or aspirin as anti-migraine meds is generally okay if it is done only occasionally. However, people might not know that taking too many pain-relieving meds to cure migraines can backfire. Our independent pharmacy in Ohio can shed more light on this.

Frequent or excessive intake of pain-relieving meds can result in an unwanted effect. It may even cause more headaches or offer only temporary relief, making you want to take more when it wears off. This condition is called rebound or medication-overuse headaches (MOH). This is one of the most common chronic headache disorders.

There are a lot of medications that can cause MOH. But if you have prescription medications that you’re supposed to take every day to keep you from getting migraines, you should still take those as prescribed by your doctor. Preventive migraine medicines do not cause MOH. On the other hand, medicines that act as migraine pain relief should not be taken every day or regularly.

Some of the over-the-counter pain relievers and pain-relieving drugs that can be prescribed by your doctor should be used with caution. These include butalbital, CGRP antagonists, dihydroergotamine, Lasmiditan, opioids, triptans, and Ubrogepant.
