Multivitamins – Do You Actually Need Them?

We often associate multivitamins with essential supplements. These have gained popularity for the belief that they can improve health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and can compensate for poor eating habits. However, are these claims actually true?

As a pharmacy in Cleveland, Ohio we get asked these questions often. While the answer to this question is still debated to this day, here are some facts we do know about multivitamins:

  • Evidence is mixed
While multivitamins can offer you many of the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs, studies are mixed regarding their effectiveness in preventing heart disease and cancer.
  • They can improve brain function and eye health
While heart disease and cancer claims may be false, multivitamins can actually help improve brain function and improve memory in older adults. It has also been known to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
  • Multivitamins can be harmful in some cases
High amounts of vitamins such as vitamin A and D can be toxic to the human body.
  • Certain populations can benefit from them
You can benefit from multivitamins if you are an older adult, a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, or vegan or vegetarian.

For people with nutrient deficiencies, it is best to consult your doctor to find a specific supplement you would need instead of going for multivitamins.

While multivitamins are beneficial, especially to a certain population, it is not a cure-all and a dietary replacement. It is still best for you to get the vitamins you need from a healthy diet.
